Fall at MEarth is beautiful and delicious! This time of year at MEarth the kids are harvesting corn, planting fava beans, and making chard pesto. They’re learning about how our local indigenous groups used Tulle Reeds to make boats (and making their own small versions) and why a fresh picked tomato tastes so darn good! CSUMB service learners have been harvesting produce to feed our neighbors in need, and today they’re right outside my office learning how cover crops are a climate solution. Quite an array of ways we’re connecting students to the natural world and how humans’ interdependence requires us to take action to protect it!
As you may know, due to the shutdown, SNAP benefits for hungry neighbors are in limbo. This month, like every month we will donate all of our extra produce. I want to highlight that over 10,000lbs of produce come out of our 1 acre garden every year and 80% of this food is donated either through The Share in Big Sur or to kids at Carmel Middle School who qualify as homeless. We’re working with the school district and the local Scout troop to see how we might amplify our donations by partnering with others.
